Directions to Casa de los Espejos
Calle Arquillos 8
Alhama de Granada 18120
From Malaga airport (about 1hr 15mins):
Leave the airport & follow signs for Malaga, you will now join the motorway & want to take the second exit signed to Antequera.
After going through a tunnel & heading uphill with Malaga & the coast on your right, take another exit signed to Antequera, Seville & Granada.
After about 20km driving up through the Malaga Mountains you then need to take the exit signed to Granada, this brings you onto the A92 motorway heading east.
Now follow Route 1 or Route 2 below, as the mood grabs you . . . .
A slower, twisty road taking you through stunning scenery of rugged mountains & valleys planted with olive groves. This route has no view of Alhama as you approach the town.
After the town of Loja, take Exit 197 to Salar & Alhama de Granada.
Drive through Salar (please mind horrendous speed bumps!) & follow the road as it climbs uphill out of town. This road has some rather sharp bends that are badly signed, if at all, so take care.
After about 20 minutes you will descend into Alhama. Take the second exit off the first roundabout (there will now be a parade of shops on your right). Go straight over the second roundabout.
A mainly new & fast road taking you through a few small towns & villages & a patchwork of olive groves & agricultural crops on gently rolling hills. This route takes about 5 minutes longer than option 1, but does give a wonderful view of Alhama nestled in the hills as you approach.
Take Exit 211 off the motorway to Moraleda de Zafayona & Alhama de Granada.
Turn right after the first petrol station & follow this road through Moraleda. It’s a bit twisty to begin with but you hit the newly completed fast road after a couple of kms.
Pass through the villages of Buena Vista & Santa Cruz del Comercio (mind the well-disguised speed bumps in Santa Cruz).
A few kms out of Santa Cruz you will then be able to see Alhama ahead of you off to the right.
As you come into the town you pass a few shops & bars on either side before coming to a roundabout. Take the third exit off this roundabout.
Directions to the house from roundabout at end of Routes 1 & 2:
Drive around the small park/playground on your left & turn right up the steep hill at the end.
Go straight over the junction at the top of the hill, Bars Ochoa & Boega will be on your left.
Take the first immediate left & then left again into Calle Arquillos.
Casa de los Espejos is the first house on the left, painted blue & yellow.
You can park for free anywhere in the surrounding streets or the main plaza at the bottom of Calle Arquillos. N.B. The use of clutch control seems to be a bit of an anomaly here when roadside parking spaces are on gradients, we’ve had several ‘mysterious’ dings in bumpers & cracked number plates over the years, so would therefore recommend parking in one of the allotted spaces provided in the plaza, hopefully reducing any potential dings to your hire car.
An alternative route to return to Malaga airport:
This is a spectacular drive that is best appreciated heading from Alhama back to the coast. Best not undertaken with nervous passengers or anyone suffering vertigo however!
From the front door, drive down Calle Arquillos into the main plaza.
Take the first right & then right again up Calle Enciso. Follow this road right to the top of town & turn right at the junction.
Take the first ‘proper’ left-hand turning (not the gravel tracks!) up a very steep hill.
This road takes you through a beautiful fertile plain & then over the lunar-like landscape of the lower part of the Sierra de Loja. You then descend into another fertile plain before arriving at Ventas de Zafarraya.
Go straight over the first/only junction & drive straight through the town.
Pass under the old railway bridge & through the spectacular cut in the mountainside & drink in the stunning view of the Costa Tropicale heading down to the coast & the Mediterranean Sea, you may even catch a glimpse of Africa if there isn’t a haze. N.B. to appreciate this view on foot for a minute, park on the gravel siding just before the cut in the mountainside & the bridge, it really is worthwhile & hard to stop or turn around once beyond the bridge.
Follow this classic ‘switchback’ road all the way, passing through the town of Vinuela.
When you get to the Vinuela reservoir/lake, follow signs for Velez Malaga. This road takes you all the way down to the coast.
Now ignore turnoffs to Velez Malaga on your left & continue straight on until you see the motorway passing overhead. Take the slip road on the right signed to Malaga.
Stay on the motorway ‘Autovia de Mediterraneo’ for 30 minutes or so, passing Malaga on your left. Then take the exit signed to Torremolinos (the airport is indicated by a very small plane on the signs only at this point, which is easy to miss - speaking from experience!)
Now follow all Aeropuerto signs, hire car drop-off is clearly indicated as you approach the airport.
